Final Fantasy VII Remake was released on April 10, 2020 and is the first game in a series of planned remakes of the 1997 game Final Fantasy VII . Final Fantasy VII Remake takes place in Midgar, an industrialized world where everything runs on mako, the lifeforce of the planet. Through the game, the player plays as Cloud Strife, a mercenary, and members of the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE, to take down the megacorporation Shinra. Shinra is responsible for retrieving all of the mako that Midgar runs on and in doing so is harming the planet. The combat combines elements from a variety of Square Enix’s franchises to get a combat system that combines turn based strategy with real time action. The game features a similar materia system as the original, where the player can equip a variety of materia which gives the player and their allies certain abilities. An example is healing materia, which gives the player the ability to health themselves or their teammates. The game also features a unique weapon system that allows the player to upgrade their weapons throughout the story allowing the player to customize it to their unique play style. If the player takes a liking to a specific weapon, it can be viable throughout the entire game. With an updated combat system, Final Fantasy VII Remake also incorporates new area and side quests into the game allowing for more character development. Overall, as someone who hadn’t played the original I thoroughly enjoyed Final Fantasy VII Remake. There were some parts that were a little confusing if you hadn’t played the other games but it did not diminish the overall experience of the game. If you enjoy crazy boss fights and great storytelling then I would give Final Fantasy 7 Remake a try.
